“News and views in the convergence era: Challenges and opportunities"

            A host of new media technologies have brought in significant changes in our society. In particular, the proliferation of 24x7 news channels and a variety of digital devices coupled with their portability, multimedia versatility, and other user-friendly features have begun to change the way people access news and views on and about unfolding events and issues.

            Social media entities like the Facebook and Twitter have emerged both as sources of news and information and as galvanisers of public opinion and action. These entities also have the potentials of spreading exaggerated accounts of events, if not clear rumours. In this milieu, the traditional media like newspapers, radio and TV have also begun to redefine their news programming and presentation practices in varying ways. 

The Seminar

            All these developments in relation to India society and mass media need to be explored in their totality.  With that aim, the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism, Karnatak University, Dharwad, in association with Karnataka Media Academy, Bengaluru, is organising a two-day national seminar on “News and views in the convergence era: Challenges and opportunities" on  28 – 29 January 2103.

The sub-themes of the seminar include:

·   News and opinions in the convergence era

·   Need for regulating  social networks

·   Conventional media and social networks

·   Social networks, their reach and impact

·   Media and their ethical role

·   Mass media and development

·   Regional language media, their reach and impact

·   24 hour news channels and their role

·   Cinema in the convergence era

 About the Organisers:

            The Department of Mass Communication and Journalism is celebrating 30 years of its service in postgraduate teaching and research. It is one of the leading centres for journalism education in the country. 

   The Karnataka Media Academy, Bengaluru, is also celebrating its 30^th years of service. 

            Leading media educators and practitioners will participate in the seminar which will be held at the University Campus.

Registration Fee:

            The registration fee is Rs.1, 000 for faculty members, Rs.500 for research scholars, and Rs.200 for students from other institutions.  The registration fee covers free accommodation on twin-sharing basis, boarding and seminar kit for faculty and research scholars. We request you to contact us immediately for accommodation in the University Guest Houses. Those who prefer to stay outside can contact us to book rooms in hotels. There are a number of hotels where the tariff ranges from Rs.450 to Rs.2000 per day per person.

Submission of papers and abstract:

            You are welcome to present papers based on original research or critical reviews and analysis at the seminar.  Please send 300 words extract of your paper on or before Jan 15, 2013. Full length paper must be submitted by Jan 25, 2013.

            We are planning to publish the proceedings of the seminar. Therefore, we request you to follow APA style in quoting sources.

            Besides inaugural and valedictory functions, there would be four sessions for paper presentations. We request you to prepare a PPT presentation of 8+2 minutes incorporating the main points of your study. Send your papers/extracts only on MS Word format (Times New Roman, font size 12).

         We will make sure that your stay and proceedings would be very beneficial.

How to reach Dharwad:

            Dharwad is well connected by road/rail network and could be reached via Mumbai, New Delhi, Hyderabad, Chennai, Panaji and Bengaluru. It is located in between Pune and Bengaluru (around 430 kms). Hubli-Dharawad are twin cities under one Corporation.

            Dharwad is also connected by air. SpiceJet operates a daily evening flight from Bengaluru to Hubli. The airport is 24 Kms from Dharawad. During January, weather will be very pleasant. However, we advise you to bring warm clothes.

Tourist places around Dharawad:

            Around Dharwad, within a radius of about 200 kms, there are fine tourist places such as  Goa, Dandeli, Bijapur, Badami, Pattadakal, Aihole, Hampi and Bijapur.
