Not many people know that journalism played an important role in turning Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, an average lawyer into Mahatma Gandhi, the social reformer, apostle of non-violence and freedom fighter.

He was actively involved with journalism for over five decades of his life. He published/ edited five newspapers: Indian Opinion, Satyagraha, Navjeeban, Young India and Harijan.

Several language editions of Navjeeban and Harijan have been published. Gandhi used his stint with journalism to hone his ideas related to concepts like satyagraha, non-violence.

He used his newspaper for social awareness, social reform,  spreading his ideas and concepts and freedom movement. Gandhi's papers changed the face of Indian journalism in several ways.

An anthology of essays dealing with this aspect of Gandhi's life titled Mahatma Gandhi: Journalist and Editor' edited by Dr. Mrinal chatterjee and Snehasis Sur was published in 2018 by Kolkata Press Club.
